Halberstam chronicled the Vietnam "lying machine" David Halberstam's book "The Best and the Brightest" has been called "the most comprehensive saga of how America became involved in Vietnam." He covered American life from politics to sports for more than half a century and was on his way to another interview on April 23, when he died in a car crash. Halberstam gave the keynote address at a conference on "Vietnam and the Presidency" on March 10, 2006 at the Kennedy Library in Boston.
